A stamp looks simple when it is finished. A border, a few lines of type, perhaps a small symbol, and one ink color seem to leave little room for technological upheaval. The work behind that compact object tells a different story. Someone still has to decide what the stamp should say, what it must not imply, how it should reproduce at its final size, and whether every small space will survive repeated impressions.
